  2. I’m not even going to try to be objective here. In fact, I don’t even own an X-Box, and I extend my deepest condolences to anyone who does. Back when PS2 came out and could play DVDs, it was a novelty feature that probably helped sell a few extra systems. By this point, most of us already have DVD players, so what’s the point? I’ve heard a lot of negativity towards Gamecube because it can’t play DVDs and X-Box can, but I guess those people forgot that X-Box requires a(n) (…) accessory that apparently can’t be found in many places. While I understand that the license required to play DVD movies justifies the cost and this could be considered a way for Microsoft to subtract (…) from the cost of the basic system, the wonderful “IT PLAYS DVDS!” marketing ploy kills my sympathy. With DVD playback and a hard drive (and system crashes!), Microsoft seems determined to make X-Box be a cheap computer. That would be a wonderful idea if the thing played PC games, but instead, it’s just a game console with all the extra baggage of a PC.

  3. the ps2 has DVD, and 10 dollar optional remotes. There is a 300 dollar panason DVD gamecube for 300, that has DVD and a remote already. Why does the “greatest” system require more money, but still brag about DVD playback?

  4. First off why do you have to pay extra (money) just to watch dvds.
At least with PS2 you could use the controller in a pinch. If you really wanted a Controller you could buy the sony one for (less). And to all you people who say the PS2 DVD is bug plaged it is not true. Some people did have problems but that is only the minority. I got my PS2 the first day it came out and no problem. Some of those people may just have pluged the system into the VCR. The DVD encyption auotmatically scrambels it so you can’t copy it. This may also happen to XBOX so be careful. (…)

  5. The fact that Xbox can play DVDs is sure to catch the attention of many players. Though I’m not so sure why. Combine the cost of this playback kit with the extra $100 price difference from Gamecube and you’re paying $130 for a DVD player, while meanwhile you can get a stand alone DVD player with CD/RW and MP3 playback, Coaxial and color differential outputs and far more options for $99 or under. If you want to play DVDs, I have an original idea: Get a DVD player.

The remote itself, which is required if you want to watch any DVDs, is terrible. Its overly large (much like the controller) and lacks many options. Where’s the angle, subtitle, and audio functions? How about multiple speed forward and rewind? Anything? This remote has less functions than a VCR.

Finally, the mere marketing Microsoft used on this is immoral. They shout “IT CAN PLAY DVDS, IT CAN PLAY DVDS!” and neglect to mention you MUST buy other accessories to make it work. Thus for Xbox, the remote, and just one game you’ll end up paying well over $400 with tax. Believe it or not, most of us already have a dynamic gameplaying machine with a hard drive, DVD playback and the ability to customize music. It’s called a computer. So folks, don’t waste $400 plus on a computer suplement with bad DVD functions. If you want computer games, go buy computer games.
