Mac’s have time machine why would they want this lame, upsupported, sloppy copy of a built in leopard feature. Time Machine works, Prosoft products don’t there is the difference.

I got this software free with the purchase of a OWC external drive. I installed the software and it never worked. I’m using a one year-old MacBook. I downloaded the updated version. It fails to backup and when I launch the Help function inside the app it crashes the program. I’m glad I only wasted my time trying to get this to work. I’d be furious if I spent money on this buggy application.

I would give this product 5 stars if the error log wasn’t so cryptic. I was able to figure out the errors (meaningless as they were about photo data).
We have a fairly complex environment here (multiple Mac’s and PC’s) and we keep most of our shared materials on a RAID 5 NAS, backing up a NAS is made too difficult by NAS providers and I wanted to be able to back up our entire NAS regularly to an external RAID 1 Disk. After doing that I swap one of the removable drives out of my external drive, put it in a safe deposit box and have some peace of mind about files being protected. I have used EMC Retrospect and while it “works” it leaves much to be desired; The interface is overly complex and the basic operations leave much to be desired. It also has a real glaring error to me; the backup sets are in a proprietary format, therefore you cannot restore files without Retrospect. Also, it has been reported that EMC has sold Retrospect to Sonic, so the state of the product is in flux as of this time. Data Backup 3 can be used to do a simple copy and the files are left in their original format and the directory structure is preserved. I backed up about 500GB and it worked very well. It also has the more powerful options that good backup software has as well as the ability to clone drives which is useful (recovery from a failed boot drive) if you are not using SuperDuper or carbon Copy Cloner
I have been waiting for a long time to be able to easily accomplish this without worrying about making a manual copy or having proprietary formats so I am a fan of Data Backup 3.

I bought an external disk drive for backing up our Macs, and it came with Data Backup 2.1. Since this was before Apple’s Time Machine software, I started using DB and found it entirely satisfactory. I use it regularly, and before every trip with my laptop. I had a laptop HD failure, and restore of my stuff after replacement and OS X re-install was perfect.
Recently DB started Initializing but then shut down. Software does not wear out due to use, but to changes in its environment. To see what the problem was, I contacted customer service at Prosoft Engineering. Michael responded with instructions to uninstall and reinstall. He added stuff that had to be done in addition to using the Uninstall option on the initial window. I think this should, if possible, be incorporated into the one-click process. In any case that did not work, so I sent back the relevant lines from /var/log/system.log.
Michael, to his credit, recognized that I was knowledgeable about Unix-based computing, and the level of our discussion was adjusted. He ultimately concluded that a Java update had made version 2.1 no longer operable. They are a small company and do not maintain over-mature products. He pointed me to a download of the latest Beta version of DB 3.
I installed that, everything worked dandy. So I got a good deal on a DB 3 product upgrade, and all is well. Great customer service.

I recently received a copy of Data Backup 3 with my new Guardian Maximus Raid, and initially I was having a problem scheduling backups with the software. I emailed tech support and received a link to a newer version of the software from Michael, who was extremely helpful. The new version works well, and it’s a good feeling to know that your backups are up to date! I really like the folder synchronization features too, that’s missing in a lot of similar software.
